Research Group Hövels
RG Hövels develops biotechnological processes for the production of functional sugar alternatives. The aim is to synthesise innovative and sustainable sweeteners with the aid of unique bio-catalysts, process them to a high degree of purity and make them usable for industrial applications. Our methodological spectrum ranges from molecular biological work and microbiological fermentation to the scaled-up production and purification of the developed sugar alternatives. Regulatory requirements such as the use of QPS-compliant microorganisms and the avoidance of antibiotic selection markers are taken into account at an early stage. Our research is closely linked to the multi-award-winning start-up project Sweethoven Biotech, which aims to contribute to the National Reduction Strategy and the nutritional turnaround with bio-based and healthier sweeteners.
